Development history and international standards of ton bags

May 23, 2025

Ton bags, also known as flexible bulk bags or space bags, are medium-sized bulk containers that can be transported in a unitized manner mainly by cranes or forklifts. They are convenient for transporting bulk powder materials and have the characteristics of large volume, light weight, and easy loading and unloading. They are one of the common packaging materials.

Development history of ton bags
In the 1940s, the initial form of bulk bags had already been produced; from the 1940s to the early 1960s, bulk bags were made of PVC rubber and used to transport carbon black rubber products; later they were gradually improved to form early modern bulk bags, using polypropylene bags and modern weaving technology, thus providing a durable and flexible way to package and transport materials.
The rapid development of the bulk bag industry occurred during the oil crisis in the mid-1970s. Driven by the large-scale refining infrastructure of oil-producing countries, a large amount of cement was continuously sent to the Middle East. According to statistics, about 30,000 to 50,000 tons of cement are exported from Northern Europe, Spain and Italy in bulk bags every week.
By the 1990s, a standardized method for transporting goods through bulk bags was evident. Any material that requires a flexible container, or an industry that wants to save storage warehouse space, can be used with bulk bags for better performance and compact resource management.
Compared with developed countries, the development of my country's bulk bag industry began in the 1980s, later than developed countries, but after 20 years of rapid development, my country's current capacity of bulk bags ranks among the top in the world.

International standards for ton bags
My country's bulk bag standard is GB/T10454-2000, which is modified from the old standard GB/T 10454-1989. my country's bulk bag standard specifies the classification structure, technical requirements and inspection requirements of bulk bags. This standard applies to bulk bags with a volume between (0.5-2.3) m^3 and a load between (500-3000) kg.
The main foreign container bag standards are: British Standard BS6382, Australian Standard AS3668-1989, European Standard EN1898-2000, European Container Bag Association Standard EFIBCA Standard, Japanese Standard JISZ1651-1988.
Among them, the AS3668-1989 quality inspection standard refers to the BS6382 standard, and the two are relatively similar and have little difference; the contents of EN1898-2000 and EFIBCA standard are also roughly the same; the test items of the Japanese standard JISZl651-1988 are similar to my country's container bag standard GB/T10454-2000.

These international quality inspection standards for container bags have made relatively detailed provisions on the production, design and use of container bags. Although the general inspection direction is the same, there are slight differences in the performance test requirements for container bags.
