What are the styles of ton bags?

Apr 15, 2025

There are many common ton bags on the market. The most commonly used ton bags are constructed in U-panel or round configurations and may contain a simple PE liner or no liner at all. The way a ton bag is referred to largely has to do with its construction, i.e. 4-panel, U-panel, round, or its application, such as B-bag or baffle bag.

What is a U-panel bag?
A U-panel bag requires 2 seams along 2 opposing sides to create 2 panels and a "U" panel shape. This style of ton bag has become the industry standard in the United States.

What is a round/tubular bag?
Round bags are made from fabric woven on a circular loom. The fabric is woven into a continuous fabric tube and then cut to the correct size height. The tubular body design is ideal for an unlined option for delicate materials. It is also a great alternative to the original four-panel bag construction. Capacity up to 4000 lbs.

What is a quad bag?
The quad-panel bag is the original polypropylene design. This design requires stitching along four separate pieces of fabric to create a quad-panel bag. Capacity up to 4400 lbs.

What is a baffled bag? What are baffles?
Baffles are pieces of fabric sewn into the inside corners of the bag to maintain its cube shape after filling. Baffles have holes in them to allow the product to flow freely through. Baffles also prevent the bag from bulging, allowing the bag to stand upright, allowing the bag to use space more efficiently. Mesh and tie baffles are another type of baffle option, but are less common.

What is a Type "A" Bag?
Type "A" bags are made of untreated insulating fabric. No requirements are specified for Type "A" bulk bags as they are not suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. No static protection.
Safe for transporting non-flammable products.
Flammable solvents or gases must not be present around the bag.
Do not use for transporting flammable products.

What is a Type "B" Bag?
Type "B" bags are made of insulating fabric, but with a breakdown voltage of less than 6kV. This provision prevents the risk of high energy propagating brush discharges that could ignite the dust-air mixture. Type "B" bags can be used when combustible dusts with MIE greater than 3MJ are present, but flammable vapors are not present. Low breakdown voltage.
Safe for transporting dry, flammable powders.
Flammable solvents or gases must not be present around the bag.
Do not use for transporting flammable products.

What is a Type "C" bag?
Type "C" bags are constructed of fabric with interconnecting conductive threads. The bag must be grounded during filling and emptying.
Safe for transporting flammable powders.
Use safely when flammable solvents or gases are present around the bag.
Do not use when the ground connection is not present or has been damaged.

What is a Type "D" bag?
Type "D" bags are constructed of antistatic fabric with static dissipative agent. This type of ton bag does not require grounding.
Safe for transporting flammable powders.
Use safely when flammable solvents or gases are present around the bag.
Do not use when the surface is contaminated or coated with conductive materials such as water or grease.
