FIBC Safety Factor

Nov 14, 2022

The national standard GB10454-2000 "Container Bags" mentions the issue of "safety factor", but the degree of importance is debatable. The standard stipulates in clause 5.5.1: "periodic lifting test" that "fill the contents into the bulk bag evenly to full load, hang a load equivalent to 2 times the load, limit the use of the bag 70 times, and use it for one-time use. The bag is lifted repeatedly for 30 times. Whether the container bag is qualified mainly depends on whether the contents and the bag body are abnormal, and whether the connection part is damaged. If there is no damage, it means that the test has passed.”

"Container Bag Standard" 10454-89 stipulates that the total tensile force of the sling (rope) (according to the design form) should be greater than or equal to 6 times the rated load. A safety factor of "6" is given. In practice, this safety factor is inconsistent with the overall lifting test. The 6-fold factor of the lifting ring cannot prove that the whole bag has a 6-fold safety factor. It only represents the higher tensile force index that the sling needs to achieve when it is inspected separately. When the sling is connected with the bag body, there are various types such as top hanging, side hanging and bottom hanging, and are connected by stitches. In the side hanging and top hanging, if the base fabric and stitching do not reach a certain level of strength performance, only the high strength of the sling cannot ensure the high performance of the overall test; Type and sewing method, the strength loss is also between 10-30%. Therefore, the whole bag lifting test requires three times the full load and repeated lifting, and the specific structure of the product is ignored when determining the performance of the sling. When the 2000 edition of the "Container Bags" standard was revised, in order to ensure the safe loading and unloading of the bags, the top hanging bags and side hanging bags in the original standard were can celled. This method seems to be inappropriate. To ensure quality, mainly rely on proven production technology and reliable material quality to ensure. Top-sling and side-sling styles have merit in processing and cost, especially in lightweight bag products. The principle of the standard should be to point out the direction, and should not prescribe rules and regulations to limit the effective play of the ingenuity of designers.
